Renei Ngawati
Renei is of Ngāti Hine and Ngaāti Pōrou descent. She was raised in West Auckland with her parents Gerard and Carol, and her two sisters. Educated at Kahurangi ki Maungawha, Auckland Girls’ Grammar School, she was amongst wāhine Māori with a passion for mana wāhine, te reo Māori and tikanga Māori alongside and education system to use Māori advancement. Renei has been raised in a whānau that has been active in sport, education, health and Māori development. Her professional background has also been a mix of all of these areas within her roles as a lecturer in Māori health and development, Māori health research, and project management. She is a mother to four tamariki and has been able to work, study and raise tamariki with the help of her whānau over the last 20 years.
Renei works towards creating whānau outcomes through platforms that Māori enjoy including kori tinana, sport, kai oranga and recreation. She has experience in creating equity and equality-based outcomes for Māori internal and external Government agencies. A lateral thinker, Renei is able to connect dots across sectors for community and organisational outcomes. Renei has been based at Toi Tangata since 2019, enjoying the organiasation’s commitment to oranga through areas that Māori thrive in and enjoy. Currently, her main area of work is creating an equity-based funding pool for kaimahi hauora Māori to access and remove barriers to Te Reo Māori use and advancement in the health sector. |
